Character: Revali
Canon: Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, from after Vah Medoh is freed from Windblight Ganon.
Age: dead? Revali's age is never outright stated in the game, but he's an adult Rito, probably around his 20s at his time of death.
Background Information: Bird
Personality: The best way to describe Revali is that he's, well, a bit of a dick. He's haughty, arrogant, and behaves as if it's such a bother to even show up for things he's deemed meaningless ceremony. He speaks what's on his mind, not bothering to sugar coat the truth, even if it's perhaps not the best time or place for him to do so. Even when he decides to go along with the group and lend his skills, such as when Zelda first asks him to pilot the Divine Beast Vah Medoh, he can't resist pretending to be aloof and unconcerned about giving his answer, letting Zelda sweat it out a bit. Answering immediately, according to him, would mean having no self respect.
Revali is very showy, confident, and assured of himself and his own skills--saying at one point that the Royal Family might as well just ask for him by name already when describing what they're looking for in a Champion--and it's not actually without reason. He's a perfectionist and constantly working to develop new flight techniques or break his previous records, to the point where he requested a special flight range built in his name to make his training easier. He wants to be recognized for his talents and feels he deserves it, and greatly enjoys the flattery and admiration he receives from his fellow Rito for being what they see as a legendary Rito warrior. This, however, goes hand in hand with a bit of insecurity he won't admit to; because of his perfectionism and desire to be known, he feels as if he has to constantly one-up himself and that anything else just wouldn't be good enough.
Tied in with his confidence is Revali's extreme pride. He worked hard to develop his skills, and his reputation is something he created on his own. He dislikes being assigned anything less than a starring role, just as he dislikes when people don't act appropriately impressed (LINK) with his talent. When he feels like his pride is bruised, he tends to act out more, talking himself up and picking at whoever it is that he feels slighted him. It's the main reason why he has his own dumb rivalry view of Link; he doesn't know how to read him or what other people see in Link, because to him, Link is just too quiet and emotionally blank, to the point where he wonders how much he's even aware of. Part of it is also that he's jealous of Link and his "starring role," given that he does privately acknowledge Link's skills and that Link was able to achieve victory where he could not. That doesn't stop him from, even as a ghost trapped in a Malice-controlled machine, berating Link for being late and being condescending when giving advice as Link is going through the divine beast.
That's not to say he's all bad. He's an ass, sure, but he is technically a "good guy." He's incredibly determined and loyal when he gives his word or sets his mind to something or if you've earned his respect. He might hate the idea of playing backup for Link, but he does do it in the end. He gave his word to Zelda that he would, and even as a ghost, he's going to do just that. He has a loyalty and fondness for his home village and the other Rito, allowing them to use his flight range to learn how to better defend themselves and their village. He also later comments on how he will always have a soft spot for Rito Village even though any other Rito he knew while alive are long dead at this point.
While he's not the type for sentimentality or earnest, heartfelt declarations, remarking that Zelda's honest request for his help filled him with so much second-hand embarrassment he could've died, he does sort of try if it involves someone who has earned his respect. He isn't good at it by any means, but he does make a point of trying to understand and be more sensitive of Zelda's struggles with her sealing powers, even making a point to hope that her powers will finally show her some mercy after all her struggles. He's perceptive, even if those more emotionally charged conversations are usually too vulnerable for his tastes.
Abilities & Inventory: As a giant bird, he's good at flying. I mean very good. Revali trained hard to develop a technique later named Revali's Gale to create an updraft to allow him to soar through the skies more easily, rather than flapping to take off in the air, like every other bird. The Rito might be all about flying, but not many Rito are able to control windspeed in this way.
He is also renowned for being one of, if not the best archer among all the Rito in Breath of the Wild's Hyrule. Many of Rito Village's archery records were set by Revali himself, due to his speed, ability to create updrafts, and deadly accuracy. His weapon of choice, the Great Eagle Bow, is one that is notorious for being too heavy and creating too much drag for most Rito to use. Revali, however, easily uses his speed and strength in the air to overcome the bow's weight to use the weapon to its full potential.
Inventory: Revali will arrive with the clothes on his back, his Great Eagle Bow, and a quiver of bomb arrows. Normal arrows are also acceptable if you don't want bomb arrows in the game.
Suitability & Plans: sometimes, a game just needs a bird that happens to be a giant asshole, and I am happy to fill this role. But also, an easy fantasy-ish game like Song is the sort of game that works well for fully non-human fantasy characters like Revali, and getting him out of canon to attempt to maybe make one (1) singular friend sounds fun. (let's be real, he'll mostly make frenemies at best...) Also, it sounds fun to toss him somewhere most people don't have personal experience with human-sized bird people.
